4.38 lakh crore increase in cost of 470 infra projects, 525 projects behind schedule

New Delhi. As of May 1, 2021, at least 470 infrastructure projects across the country have cost over Rs 4.38 lakh crore. The Flash Report on Central Sector Projects for April published by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation showed that 525 projects are running behind schedule.

Of the 1,737 projects, only 11 are ahead of schedule, 213 are on time, the report showed. “The total original cost of implementation of the 1737 projects was Rs 22,33,409.53 crore and their estimated completion cost is likely to be Rs 26,71,440.77 crore, showing a total cost escalation of Rs 4,38,031.24 crore (19.61 per cent of the original cost).”

what does the report say
According to the ministry report, the expenditure on these projects till April 2021 is more than Rs 13.16 lakh crore, which is 49.26 per cent of the estimated cost of the projects. However, it added that the number of delayed projects comes down to 375 if the delay is calculated based on the latest schedule. Further, neither the year of commissioning nor the expected construction period has been reported for 988 projects.
