Petrol and diesel prices skyrocketing In between, on Saturday, July 24, the common man has got some relief. Oil companies did not change the prices of fuel today. This is the seventh consecutive day when petrol and diesel prices remained stable. According to the rate issued by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), petrol in the national capital Delhi remained at Rs 101.84 per liter while diesel remained at the previous level of Rs 89.87 per liter. Diesel prices have been reduced twice in the month of July, while there has been no cut in petrol.

Mumbai has the highest price of petrol and diesel among the four major metro cities. Oil prices vary from state to state due to Value Added Tax (VAT). In Mumbai, the price of a liter of petrol is Rs 107.83 while diesel is at Rs 97.45. In Kolkata, the retail prices of petrol and diesel stood at Rs 102.08 and Rs 93.02 per liter respectively. Similarly, petrol is being sold at Rs 102.49 a liter and diesel at Rs 94.39 a liter in the retail market in Chennai today.

Petrol prices increased 39 times since May

Petrol prices in the country have been increased 39 times since May 4, 2021, while diesel has become costlier in 36 instalments. During this, petrol prices in the capital Delhi have become expensive by Rs 11.29 per liter. At the same time, the price of diesel has increased by Rs 8.96 per liter. The biggest thing is that in 19 states of the country, the price of petrol has crossed Rs 100 per liter. Diesel is also close to this figure in many places. Diesel has crossed Rs 100 per liter level at some places in Rajasthan, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

How are fuel prices decided?

State-owned oil refiners such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise the rates of petrol and diesel on a daily basis, based on the fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international markets and the rupee’s price against the dollar. Apart from this, other global and domestic factors are also taken into account. The new rates are applicable from 6 am every day.
